Every year Alys Stephens Center for Performing Arts invites our community to a marvelous celebration, the Viva Health Starlight Gala. This is no ordinary event; it is an event that raises vital funds for UAB’s Alys Stephens Performing Arts Center programming and ArtPlay’s education and outreach initiatives, and celebrates the accomplishments of individuals who have made a significant contribution to the arts in our community.
The evening began with reception decorated with lush roses that adorned the lobbies. Music was provided by a jazz ensemble made up of UAB students. Sparkling rose wine and hors d’oeuvres by Hot & Hot set the tone for a festive evening.
Chair of the Board Theresa Harper Bruno opened the evening with a heartfelt thank you to everyone that attended the Gala and the sponsors of the event. She also introduced the 2012 Patron of the Arts Award recipients Carol Garrison and Julian Banton. They both spoke about their belief in the arts, as well as the importance of the ASC to the UAB campus and the community.
The performance by Al Pacino did not disappoint. Mr. Pacino showed film clips, told stories of movie making, and read and acted literature, including from Oscar Wilde. Although he spoke lovingly about his career in films and live on stage in the theatre, Pacino revealed his love and passion for the works of William Shakespeare, which are perhaps among the most significant influencers of his career.
After the performance, gala dinner guests arrived across the street at the UAB National Alumni Society House, which was marked by a Hollywood style search light. Leading up to the entrance of the Alumni House was a red carpet complete with paparazzi. The great hall in the Alumni House was transformed into an elegant ball room draped in lavish red velvet. Each table was adorned with intricately designed table clothes and centerpieces of white roses illuminted by candlelight. The highlight of the evening was a visit by Al Pacino, who made his way to each table to meet guests and pose for pictures.
